Frequently Asked Questions: State Electricity Tariffs in India

Which Indian states offer free electricity or tariff subsidies? ▼
Several Indian states provide electricity subsidies: Delhi offers 200 free units under the lifeline scheme; Punjab provides 300 free units per month (600 bi-monthly); Tamil Nadu gives the first 200 units free for domestic households using up to 500 units in a bi-monthly cycle (TNERC scheme, effective 10 May 2026), while consumers using over 500 units revert to the earlier 100-free-unit rule; Karnataka (Gruha Jyothi) provides up to 200 free units; and Rajasthan provides 100 free units under Mukhyamantri Nishulk Bijli Yojana.
Why do electricity bill tariff rates vary from state to state in India? ▼
Under the Electricity Act 2003, each State Electricity Regulatory Commission (SERC) determines its own retail tariff structure based on local power purchase costs, transmission infrastructure, thermal/hydro generation mix, and state government subsidy grants.
How do telescopic electricity tariff slabs work in India? ▼
In a telescopic billing system, electricity consumption is divided across successive slab tiers. For example, if you consume 250 units with slabs 0–100 at ₹4 and 101–200 at ₹6 and 201–300 at ₹8, you pay ₹4 for the first 100, ₹6 for the next 100, and ₹8 only for the remaining 50 units.
