How Electricity Billing Works in India

Electricity bills are calculated in four steps, from your meter reading to your final amount.

Meter Reading to Units Consumed

Your electricity meter records cumulative energy consumed in kilowatt-hours (kWh). Subtracting your prior meter reading from your current reading gives total units consumed during the billing cycle (monthly or bi-monthly).

Telescopic Slab Allocation

Under progressive telescopic billing, consumption is divided into successive brackets. Initial units are charged at lower base rates, while higher rates apply only to additional units in higher tiers, preserving lower slab benefits.

Fixed Charges & Fuel Surcharges

Fixed capacity fees are charged per kilowatt (kW) of sanctioned load to maintain grid infrastructure. Variable fuel adjustments (FAC/FPPPA) and state electricity duty percentages are added to the energy charges.

Government Subsidies & Net Payable

State-specific welfare policies (such as up to 200 free units in Tamil Nadu, 200 units in Delhi, or Gruha Jyothi in Karnataka) are deducted directly from the gross bill, determining your final net amount payable.
