Smart Meter Reading & Time of Day (TOD) Guide
Understand prepaid/postpaid smart meters, digital display parameters, and how to save money using Time of Day tariffs.
1. Reading Parameters on Smart Meters
Digital smart meters cycle automatically through display screens every 5 seconds:
KWH Active Cumulative Energy Consumed (Your main billing reading)
KW Maximum Demand (Peak load recorded during the billing cycle)
PF Power Factor (ideally between 0.95 and 1.00)
2. Time of Day (TOD) Tariffs
With smart meters, DISCOMs introduce Time of Day (TOD) tariffs:
- Solar / Day Hours (8 AM to 4 PM): 10% to 20% tariff discount (cheapest time to run heavy appliances like washing machines & EV charging).
- Peak Hours (6 PM to 10 PM): 10% to 20% tariff surcharge during evening peak demand.
- Normal Hours: Regular slab tariff rate.
